About Us

The Sierra Leone Library Board was established by an act of Parliament in 1959 to establish, equip, manage and maintain public Libraries in Sierra Leone. The Board has twenty-five (25) Public Libraries in all the Districts and Regional Headquarter Cities in the country.

Mission: So that enlightenment and literacy may flourish in our society. The SLLB will dedicate itself to collecting and disseminating an array of information and ideas that is diverse in nature, varied in format and rich in view point. The library will provide relatively free, equal and confidential access to its resources and service, and actively promotes their use by all Sierra Leone.

Vision: I envision the SLLB as a doorway to opportunity, self-development and recreation for the public, and as a forum where they may share ideas, cultures and resources among themselves and with the outside world. The free availability of information, the lively interaction of people, and the open exchange of ideas, animates and extend the social traditions, which our country and our people have so greatly benefited.

CHILDREN’S LIBRARY

The Dilly’s Wonderland Children’s Library named after the first female Chief Librarian Mrs. Gloria DilsWorth is one of the departments that provides reading and learning materials for the children from pre-school to Senior Secondary school level to aid the children get better preparation for the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) and the basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). This department provides reference and lending books in all disciplines. Also organize activities such as drama / quiz competitions, interactive sessions, drawing and paintings as well as holiday activities.

ADULT LENDING LIBRARY

The Adult Lending Library is the gate way to the Headquarters Library in that it assists members of the public in responding to basic queries. The department provides leisure and recreational services to the adult reading public. It also provides quick reference service and promotes the culture of reading by providing local tabloids and international magazines. As it names implies, it loans book to adult readers for a stipulated time of two weeks and to be returned or renewed again after the first two weeks.

REFERENCE LIBRARY

The Reference department is an information and reference source referrer that provides accurate reference service to public. It provides up-to-date materials in all disciplines to satisfy the reading needs of the clientele, who are mainly Senior Secondary school pupils, tertiary / university students, researchers and the general public. This department comprises of the General Reference section, the Textbook collection, the Africana Collection and the Stack Room.

The General Reference section houses the main collection of the department and it is used purposely for research and reading. The Textbook Collection is a special Collection that holds prescribed textbooks that meet the needs of students preparing for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The Africana Collection has materials on Africa and in particular Sierra Leone. Its collection also includes rare books. The stack room keeps back issues of newspapers, magazines, gazettes and other publications. The reference Library in collaboration with the Program’s Unit of the Sierra Leone Library Board mounted book exhibitions and organized programs to provide current Awareness Service (CAS). This is to capture the attention of clients to newly acquired books and other relevant services provided to the public.

CATALOGUING AND ACQUISITION DEPARTMENT

The Cataloguing and Acquisition department is the Kitchen (Back Room) of the Sierra Leone Library Board in that, it receives, process and distributes library materials to various libraries, school, tertiary / university institutions, communities and other institutions. It is also responsible for the classification and cataloguing of books and the distribution of these materials to all the departments of the Headquarters library and amongst the twenty-five (25) libraries of Sierra Leone Library Board nationwide. It is the department that deals with the technical aspect of the profession (Librarianship).
